Text Box: Uplands, the retirement community, grew out of an American Missionary Association academy and church established in the 1880s. Our founder, Dr. May Cravath Wharton, came to tend to the medical needs of the students at the Pleasant Hill Academy and eventually established a hospital - Uplands which is now Cumberland Medical Center - and the Wharton Nursing Home.
As people who had supported her work in this rural community began to move to Pleasant Hill, a retirement community slowly grew up around the nursing home. Today Uplands is home to over 300 people who value simple living and serving others. It has been particularly attractive to those who have served the world as doctors, nurses, teachers, missionaries, pastors, engineers, and volunteers. What they have in common is their desire to care for each other and those in need in Cumberland County, the state of Tennessee, and around the world.
Pleasant Hill is ten miles west of Crossville, the seat of Cumberland County, with good shopping and a comprehensive medical center, including a 182 bed hospital. Thirty miles to the northwest is Cookeville, home to Tennessee Technological University. Cookeville boasts shopping malls, a symphony, and public libraries with a great diversity of offerings and programs. The Cumberland County area has many resort features including numerous golf courses, mountain cabins, and a state park with an Olympic-size pool. Uplands itself has two lakes amidst 500 plus acres of mountain land at nearly 2,000 feet elevation.
